Paid Messaging on Messenger
Paid messaging, the same surface that ships on WhatsApp, is being extended to Messenger as a new advertiser placement, projected at ~$1B in annual revenue. I led the ads-side creative-setup design so advertisers can compose Messenger-native paid messaging inside the existing Ads Manager.
What changes for advertisers when paid messaging crosses to Messenger
Same builder, four platform truths that diverge from WhatsApp. These were the deltas the creative-setup design had to reflect without fragmenting the advertiser flow. • Liquidity & pricing: WhatsApp prices per conversation; Messenger uses a distinct liquidity model with different bid mechanics and Ads Manager reporting. • Supported formats: WhatsApp ships single image only; Messenger adds carousel and collection, so the builder exposes three format paths instead of one. • Primary text: WhatsApp caps primary text at 1024 characters; Messenger removes the cap, though we recommend keeping copy short for cross-platform performance. • Conversation experience: WhatsApp drops into a structured chat with quick replies; Messenger conversations are open-ended, more like a standard ad-to-chat handoff than a guided flow.
Format setup tuned for Messenger placements
Defined the format step inside the Messenger paid-messaging builder, covering media specs, preview behavior, and platform-specific defaults that differ from WhatsApp. Same stepper, same Ads Manager shell; Messenger-native rules under the hood. Three formats supported at launch:
Primary text for Messenger
WhatsApp hard-trims primary text at 960 characters. Messenger allows longer text. Instead of copying the limit, I co-authored an A/B experiment brief with the engineering TL to test whether longer primary text on Messenger actually lifts conversation depth, or whether the WhatsApp short-copy convention still wins on the new surface.
What advertisers ship lands as a native Messenger conversation
Once the paid message is built and delivered, consumers see it as a native Messenger thread with the same in-thread reply pattern as WhatsApp, ported to Messenger's composer and chrome. The advertiser-side choices on format and primary text collapse into a single chat surface for the user.
What this work moved forward
Three outcomes from shipping the Messenger creative-setup alpha: • Alpha live on Messenger: Paid messaging shipped on Messenger as a new advertiser placement; first ads-side experience with Messenger as a paid-messaging surface. • One builder, two platforms: Same creative-setup pattern across WhatsApp and Messenger preserved advertiser familiarity, while platform-specific rules (no char cap, different media specs) accurately reflect each surface. • Foundation for Instagram Direct: The cross-platform creative-setup system became the foundation for Instagram Direct paid messaging; three placements now share one builder.
